Television Centre Celebrates 60 Year Anniversary

1960

Monday 29th June marks 60 years since the historic opening of Television Centre in 1960. Hailed as the Hollywood of the television industry, Television Centre is behind the nation’s most loved programmes, from Dad’s Army and Blue Peter to Top of The Pops and Strictly Come Dancing, and its distinctive backdrop has framed some of the best live moments in entertainment over the years.

Home to the BBC for the first five decades, Television Centre originally comprised eight studios where all shows were produced and broadcast from. Following extensive re-development between 2013 and 2018, today Television Centre brings a new purpose to West London. Still standing true to its original heritage, the legacy of British programme making continues at Television Centre, with three original television studios operated by BBC Studioworks hosting live audience recordings every day.

In honour of the anniversary, never-seen-before imagery of Television Centre from over the years has been released to showcase its incredible evolution from ‘The Television Factory’ to a vibrant community. The unearthed archive photography, by BBC Photo Archive team, celebrates Television Centre as the heart of British culture from entertainment moments, the building's unique façade, its location and heritage, and commitment to British architecture and design.

To celebrate the day many famous faces sent in their birthday wishes and memories of their time at Television Centre.
